I know of 3 students with dyslexia/processing issues that put them firmly in the bottom 2 - 12 % according to EP reports. One uses TextHELP but still works best with a scribe in some subjects, one cannot abide having a scribe and the school never got to grips with them using a word processor and did not apply for its use in exams, the third is independent when using TextHELP as a reader/scribe. A transcription is not possible for the last student where occasional words are indecipherable and when not using ICT loses all sense in sentences/paragraphs. It was not available for the other student as it was not their normal way of working. Each student has very individual needs to bring them up to around the level of a low average student and it is a shame that the exam access arrangements are only aimed at support for those under the 85 cut-off. In these three students case their IQ is between 120 & 140, but this is not factored in at all. Lack of suitable support in exams will mean their results will be /were around 'D F' and not what they deserved. Does the fault lie in parents having too high an expectation that their children get 'C' grades, that mainstream schools are failing to support them to their ability level, or a failure of exam boards to take into account a change in the normal way of working for many students, including those with dual exceptionalities?
