It is the same quibble as we have with much of these snake oil cures - results are based on a more than one technique - as with DORE providing exercises for home use + a 45 minute 1:1 multisensory teaching session on the day- or the fact that results are either not replicated elsewhere, or as with reading the studies done in such a way that the results cannot be compared. Dore had exercises which will undoubtedly work for some. I use exercises recommended by Lois Addy (OT) in her Speed up handwriting book and have had good results in both the look and speed of handwriting BUT at the same time I use a multisensory method to teach cursive lettering to those who have been unable to acquire it AND I use a multisensory fingerspelling to teach sequencing of ABC to small groups of 3-6. I have had great results - The problem is is in knowing for sure which element or combination of elements worked. With experience I can now assess and spot those with motor as opposed to sequencing/slow processing and so can skew the programme to be more exercise and coordination orientated, or for those with both problems I can extend the time on the programme. As a dyslexia tutor I can add in individual elements such as addressing b/d orientation that overall will speed up the written ABC. I am glad that DORE will no longer be around, but while I like the established Dyslexia Action I am not a fan of their prices either. Last time I enquired for my own children it was L35 per 1 + 1/2 hours with 2 other kids i.e. L70 per hour and is what drove me initially to train as a dyslexia tutor - it was cheaper! The latest 'Springboard' initiative to send a package of 1 SpLD tutor into school to assess, select & set programmes & then use volunteers to do the donkey work providing 1:1 tuition - whilst interesting - works out at around L20 per hour. Probably much the same as the LA would charge for the same service and definitely not in the best interests of those with severe dyslexia who need to have their programmes constantly tweaked by those who know what they are doing. Please - If you want a dyslexia trained teacher in school then just train one. At L2,000 -L3,000 for the 2 term course ( + 1 term private study) it is by far the most cost efficient way to provide specialist support for SpLD /GLD. As Dolfrog will be keen to point out sight & hearing tests with optometrist/audiologist are essential first steps as otherwise any support is misdirected and useless. Hong Kong has leapfrogged from 1970 - 2005 and changing their position from 'There is no dyslexia in Chinese, then providing a Chinese definition of SLD while writing Chinese assessment battery & assigning SLD under a medical umbrella to now training teachers on 60 hour courses so that there can be one SLD trained member of staff in each school - and all in under 5 years. I think only Sussex council is this forward thinking - Come on UK ! Hi All The Dore Program, was not even own invention, it was a minor program used in the US to help those who have ADD, and related issues as the underlying causes of their Dyslexic symptoms........
