Article: [senit] BBC jam website

FWIW I ran post-production trials in SLD settings for the Beeb via the Rix
Centre some months back. The work is under NDA, so I'm not sure how much
detail I can give - but throughout development I know the developers and
the production team were in and out of several schools and sought advice on
the access side widely - hence these activites uniquely having a bespoke
access panel supplimenting the standard BBC Jam accessibility controls.

>There's a problem with Safari, Apple's browser. Seems very similar to the
Firefox one.
>The BBC need to look at this carefully, since Internet Explorer
>isn't being developed for the Mac and is now pretty archaic.

We were running the trials on the near finished articles in IE via the debug
interface rather than the Learning Enviroment proper, but I'm sure teething
troubles in terms of cross-plaform issues will just be down to integration
into the Jam LE, certainly the learning objects themselves just require
Flash - discretely they run ok on my mac in Safari and Firefox. I'm certain
these issues will be fixed PDQ.

>What did load prior to the games activities failing seemed to take far too
long,
>and I'm concerned that despite some very suitable looking graphic
>elements for secondary age pupils, there are intrusive childish things
>like the dog driving a bus and wearing clothes.

They are very rich activities in terms of media content with a substantial
volume of video, audio clips, large bitmaps etc and sometimes with a heavy
first-time payload, but the media is really very interesting and engaging -
not just for padding. Quite a few content alterations were made in terms of
age-appropriateness and the producers were VERY conscious of this issue - I
suppose for the target KS3/4 audience the dog might be contentious, but is
intended as a bit of fun and for continuity and he doesn't detract from the
activities themselves which are highly appropriate for audience - also there
is a very similar beast who sells a lot of car insurance to adults and [I
think!] provided some inspiration here.

Regards,
Simon
