Article: [senit] encouraging independent ICT work

David
I don't think anyone has replied to your question,
so if I can I'll make some suggestions and perhaps somebody else can
make further comments.

As you know I don't teach students at P7+ (mainly P1 to P3) so I mainly
work with real physical objects but we do use symbol/picture worksheets.
I use them mainly to key in the staff who are working with the
individual students (teaching support workers, physio aids etc).
I have found that if I produce support material which is simple and
direct enough, I have to spend less time in managing the staff -student
interaction (and getting it at a more appropriate language level).
If you give staff a more text based complex worksheet then the
interaction with the students tends to be more complex and text based,
at least that's my general experience.
So the simple worksheets are not really for the students use (except in
a couple of instances).

I've also made multimedia (PowerPoint/Opus) records of the ICT devices
they find in their immediate environment (ie school/flat/bedroom).
We worked out a simple test for an ICT device:

1. Does it make a noise and do something?
2. Does it have a switch to turn it on/off ?
3. Does it have a plug or batteries ?

If the answer to these is Yes then it's a piece of technology,
so take a pictures/video/sound recording and put it into the simple
switch accessible slide show.

The task sheets can also be useful for recording, especially if you
leave a space for the staff to record exactly what the student did/
didn't do.

I did have a file of these tasksheets, I probably still have somewhere.

To be honest I usually make them up fresh for individual sessions, it
only takes about 5 minutes using WWS or CIP.

'probably a rubbish way to teach, but there you go,
