Commercial interest declared....
We have a program called 'AirSounds' which might be of interest, in 
respect of the above.  The program uses a webcam to put the image of the 
pupil onto the screen (monitor, or preferably, projected) - along with a 
number of musical instruments, apparently floating in mid air.  By 
reaching for them, and waving a hand over the image, you may start the 
instrument playing.  It's rather hard to describe - and so there is a 
downloadabe demo version on our website (URL below).  There are random 
instruments, percussion kit, keyboard and air guitar to try out.
