Article: [senit] ICT skills

Im not sure how the ICT skills of teachers are significantly different
from that of others - and I stress that I am talking about skills not
product knowledge

Again Ill make the point that ECDL or generic training gives users core
skills in handling applications and the OS. I'm not advocating fro ECDL
per se but that core skills are important

I have no doubt that teachers then need training in a range of specific
software related to the individual needs of pupils - however learning
software is much easier from a good starting point of knowing generic
applications and the key features of word processors, spreadsheets,
presentation software etc

After that you are in a position of stating what software pupils need or
what is the school library and seeking to develop the knowledge of these
packages whether that be on screen keyboards, text to speech or voice
recognition etc

I suppose I'm saying that a teacher with good IT skills will learn the
specialist software - someone with fewer IT skills will struggle

ECDL is not designed with education professionals in
mind, although I believe there is one version that is
more so. However ECDL includes stuff on excel and
access that a lot of teachers in spec ed dont use
though i like excel a lot myself. So I don't want to
get people trained in generic stuff that they will
struggle with and never use- been there-done that. I
think the apps listed or their mac or open source
equivalents are what teachers need to be able to use
at a basic level for starters. A generic skills model
would be interesting to see however in the context of
teachers catering for the needs of students with SLD
with autism, PMLD etc. In effect the "package" way of
looking at it is a shorthand- ie someone has basic
skills in powerpoint but does not yet in clicker. They
need basic clicker skills (or equiv) as they have
students who can or will be able to communicate with
pictures but not with text. A skills model moves
further into the picture looking at which skills the
teacher has and doesnt have in each area.Which is
great at the training differentiation stage. So really
I am starting with the needs of the students and
saying what do their teachers need to be able to do
(as a minimum, which they can't or don't already do)
