I have been following the discussion regarding staff skills with a great
deal of interest, particularly the Clicker training ideas.

As some of you will know the release of Clicker 5.2. and Penfriend XL
version 3, extends the features of Clicker, particularly in terms of
predictive on-screen keyboards and prediction with switch access.

Combined with a topic lexicon created in Penfriend and used in conjunction
with Clicker’s picture library, for example, a symbol library, you have a
very useful tool to suit a range of learners of different abilities. For
instance Clicker can display an image or a symbol alongside the predicted
word. Type an ‘h’ and Clicker can display a house alongside the prediction

It is also possible to copy and paste ‘prediction’ cells from the onscreen
keyboard into the grid section. Rather than having static cells, Penfriend
will provide ‘dynamic’ cells that change depending oh what is being typed
(similar to the onscreen keyboard but within a grid set). It works
particularly well with foreign languages when using grid sets such as days
of the week, months of the year.

Another feature is to create Close Procedures in the document part of
Clicker by using the ‘pen or highlighting’ tool to create spaces in
sentences. Used in conjunction with a topic lexicon, Penfriend will predict
words relevant to the Close task – simply click in the highlighted (close)
area and select a word from the cell to complete the task.

Over the next couple of days I will have a short tutorial and some example
grids that can be downloaded from the website.
