Article: [senit] What software ??? Laptops to be used by ASC teens

Hi Allison

Just to add to this.

iLife is a wonderful package and with office also available
This should cover all your computing as curriculum needs.
It is also worth bearing in mind that the Macbooks can also run Windows as long as you have a licensed copy of XP to hand.

Regards,

Benjamin Franks

Is it too late to change the order to MacBooks?

Seriously OS X is far more ASD friendly.

It also comes with iLife for free (nominated for an award at
BETT this year). This means iMovie and iPhoto already loaded
but more importantly it comes with Garageband, which is
probably the best podcasting set up for children.

Garageband also allows easy music creation.

Then you can download Freemind (free) for mindmapping, The
Gimp or Gimpshop (both free) for advanced
photoediting/picture creation or the very excellent
Imagewell (free) for simpler photoediting adding transparent
labels, speech bubbles etc (though iPhoto will probably be
more than adequate)

Additionally I would buy iWork to allow for simple but
professional looking desktop publishing. This has an
advanatge over MS Office in that it fully integrates with
iLife. Of course if you want it MS Office is obviously also
available for Mac but why fork out £100 when Open Office
is free?!
