Hi David I was an ICT teacher and subject coordinator while at Priory Woods and had responsibility for all of the roles you have highlighted. I had a full teaching timetable, each day being split into: AM - KS1 & 2 classes taught in the ICT room usually together with the respective class teacher. PM - KS3 & 4 taught in discreet age / ability groups. I had a couple of free sessions during the week. These were mostly taken up either with individual assessment or taking children out of class to work on specific skills. I used to spend a fair bit of my time developing the use of ICT to support work in other curriculum areas. This often involved discussions with class teachers - reviewing their planning and looking for opportunities to use ICT in a meaningful and creative way. On occasions I would team teach these lessons. In my opinion appointing an ICT teacher without having the additional responsibility of teaching a class was an inspired decision by our head teacher and governors and one which I feel greatly benefited everyone in school. Put simply, I had time to identify the issues and with the support of the senior management team, began to address them. ICT for our pupils is more than a subject to teach - for many of them it is the only way they can access communication, learning and leisure. Expectations are high and meeting them requires knowledge, experience, good resources and above all time. Not having the additional responsibility of a class certainly helped me focus on what our staff and pupils really needed and gave me the time to implement the necessary changes. I tour the country visiting schools, seeing and sharing examples of good practice. I see teachers (and often support assistants) working in a similar role to mine and achieving similar results. It's a good model and one which I hope is replicated in other special schools. Some of these might be more common where the teacher does not have a class as well; *teach ICT curriculum to classes *set up ICT support for individuals in classes *support groups using ICT in classes *take out groups for ICT *take out individual students to develop ICT skills *team teach ICT with class teachers *do individual ICT assessments *support ICT across curric-how? Some of these might relate to the client group- eg it is presumably easier to teach ICT to a class of students with MLD than with PMLD. Others might depend on the host classes- eg it might be more productive to take a student out than compete with a class lesson. Others might depend on the stage of ICT reached by the class staff- eg more intervention in those classes needing it most. Does anyone have any comments on these modes of working and when they use one rather than another?Any other patterns of working? Also any more ICT teachers in SLD without a class out there? thanks david --- Richard Walter <richardwalter at ntlworld.com> wrote: > Yes I do, > but the school is not SLD but PMLD. > At the moment I work in the classes > to support groups, > and take groups in the multimedia > studio, > and do individual sessions to > develop specific skills, > and assess new pupils. > > I don't at present have a dedicated > LSA, but that might be changing next > year as my working pattern at > Meldreth is changing. > > Richard > > david fettes wrote: > > Hi anyone work as an ICT subject teacher in SLD > > without having a class?
