Article: [senit] Transcription of class discussion.

DNS, whether used directly or via a recorder still expects to have:
-- A consistent speaker
-- Speaking consistently
-- Using a consistently positioned microphone
So you are unlikely to get very usable results from a recording of a
group through a conference microphone (or from a lecturer which people
also often ask about).

If you are lucky you might get enough recognition to get the gist of the
conversation to help with analysis and reference, but it will be a very
inaccurate transcription.

If you really want a full transcription of a group recording, you might
do better to redictate into DNS by listening to the recording, but
obviously that will need at least as much time again.

Commercial interest declared:

You might like to take a look at our new Audio Notetaker software to
help with analysing, annotating and transcribing from audio recordings.
www.dyslexic.com/audio-notetaker.

This is a new product, just out of beta, with introductory pricing and a
free upgrade to the next version and we would be very interested to get
feedback from SENIT members about how useful it is in your particular
context and suggested enhancements.

If you want a full transcription, within Audio Notetaker you could
listen, dictate with DNS and annotate fairly conveniently.

I am supporting a very able pupil with cerebral palsy in mainstream
school who is entering 6th form next year. School has asked if it is
possible for group discussions to be recorded then transcribed into his
computer so he has the information to manipulate without having large
amounts to type. I know the latest version of Dragon NS is supposed to
be able to transcribe from certain dictaphones. Does anyone have any
experience of this or any other possibilities?

Thanks

Stuart
