With any recording for signers the primary consideration is good lighting and contrast of background and clothes so that hand shapes can be clearly seen. Typically webcams have poorer colour and contrast than even a cheap video camera. In what situation is the recording taking place? Once you start introducing webcams and laptops you significantly add to the complexity. Most people can put a tape in, point the camera and press record. However using a 'virtual' recorder will depend on how easy the software is to use. It will also be dependent on how fast the computer can process the recording - if it is exam material you don't want any glitches or drop-outs in the recording. In this sort of situation I would be inclined to go for sticking to the video camera option. Is it invasive because it is being used in class? Why is a small digital video camera more invasive than a webcam and laptop? I've been asked to provide one for a Key Stage 1 BSL user to record his answers. Traditionally we have always used video camera (which is our accepted form for exam recording for all signing students) but mum says that is too invasive! Will the image be good enough or will that be very dependent on light levels? How easy will it be to store his work & might this be a feasible option? I'd appreciate any thoughts.
