On a related note....

With Windows Accessibility Options you can set your preferences so that
pressing the CTRL key shows you where your cursor is.  I rely quite
heavily on this but am yet to find a similar function on my Mac.  Is it
possible?

Not sure what the option is on Windows but Apple's Universal Access  
makes this very easy. Zoom is one of the many tools for improving  
access for users with special needs, and you can leave it turned on  
so that all you have to do to use it is press a couple of keys  
simultaneously. I've used it no end simply for grabbing the attention  
of pupils when we're working in groups and I want to get them to  
focus on a certain part of what's on screen.
In your case you can easily zoom in, type the text, then zoom out and  
get on with the task at hand.
