The Department for Education & Professional

announce a new series of seminars, open to all.
(please let us know if you are coming – chris.abbott at kcl.ac.uk)

4th December 2007

Room B6, Waterloo Bridge Wing (see
www.kcl.ac.uk/about/campuses/waterloo-det.html)

16.30 – 17.30 (refreshments available from 16.00)

Professor Sugata Mitra, University of Newcastle

Lessons from a hole in the wall

Sugata Mitra will explain the series of
experiments with touch-screen computers in Indian
villages that have led to worldwide interest and
two documentaries. Starting with the placement of
open access terminals in villages without
education, Prof Mitra has gone on to develop and
write about concepts of remoteness and minimally
invasive education, and to bring his ideas to the north-east of England.

Sugata Mitra is Professor of Educational
Technology in the School of Education,
Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle
University. He has worked in the areas of
Cognitive Science, Information Science and
Educational Technology as well as on Physics and
Energy for more than 30 years. His experiments
(often referred to as "The Hole In The Wall"
experiments) with children and the Internet have
been reported worldwide since 1999. His current
research interests include technologies for
remote and rural education, distance education,
instructional robotics, self organizing systems,
and collaborative systems on the Internet. He is
