Hi David,
We are now using Tuxpaint which is an open source program, very easy 
to 
use and some nice features, like being able to create your own stamps 
e.g. of pupils photographs etc.
It can be found at :-
www.tuxpaint.org
It is a popular piece of software amongst the students.
