Dave, you are a genius. I slowed down the mouse clicking speed and lo! I can open my emails and start programs / open folders /.....in my usual double-click way. I had been having trouble with the wireless mouse I use in parallel with my laptops synaptics touch pad ( i.e. I use the mouse but don't disable the touch pad- has worked fine for the two years I've had the laptop.) So I had restarted to remind the laptop of the mouse's existence. I suspect that before I had done that my grandson must have been trying to improve the situation and had speeded up the mouse clicks. (He has since gone off on holiday.) I'll know where to look next time this problem occurs. Dymo has sent me a fix, so that will be my next marathon. Heartfelt thanks.
