Have you looked at Clicker Paint? Because it can be incorporated into
writing grids, the art tools can be used more directively - e.g. a certain
selection of stamps which goes with the page of a book or piece of writing
they are creating; or a piece of colouring that fits with a piece of text
("A red boat on the blue sea"). You can edit which tools are available on
screen at any time, perhaps removing an overused tool to encourage them to
explore other possibilities.

I don't profess to be an art specialist (or an autism specialist, for that
matter) but it might be worth a look.

hi, I expect anyone working with autistic students
(SLD,P4-8)in art programs has has the experience of
watching them colour the whole screen one colour, and
then the whole screen another colour..I used to have
students with sld and asd who would draw certain
pictures or logos, often from tv over and over on
paper. don't seem to get this with paint programs.
Maybe just different students. One thing that helps is
programs with "stamps" so the student can print- they
often then show meticulous care in placing geometrical
stamps eg in programs like paint-ING, rather than in
programs like TUX where the stamps are
repesentational. However there is still a tendency to
(only)fill the whole screen with one stamp. Colouring
pictures eg TUX paint can produce a careful picture,
though a preference for just one colour is still
sometimes evident.Some aspects of 2paint a picture eg
stamps of their own photo in different colours appeal
but only briefly. The students show no interest in
drawing representational pictures. Anyone on the list
with an interest in autism and art -can you suggest
further ways to develop their art with ICT skills?
