Are there any conference/journal publications on autism and computers or autism and software?

Hi

We have a child with Rett Syndrome who can sometimes access a computer very
effectively using either a switch or a plasma screen. However, her motor
planning skills are very variable and sometimes neither of these access
methods are very effective for her. Her class teacher has found that the
most consistently reliable way for her to access the computer is when using
a "press any key" keyboard access method.

Does anyone know of a way of using "any key" on the keyboard to register as
a switch press?

Hopefully.

Perhaps something that can be done with AutoHotKey?

I don't know what level this child is at but if it is a cause/effect level
then you might try looking for free "keyboard bangers" software. This
software is designed for babies and let's individuals "bang" on the keyboard
and then makes sounds/images appear on the screen.

Many of them are relatively age appropriate. Here are two I can think of
http://www.klangogames.com/en/asc/
and http://www.kneebouncers.com/kneebouncers.html .

Or you can set something like an intellikeys keyboard to be used as a
switch.

I did have a look at Moodle in terms of the free
download. It didn't seem very child friendly or
special needs friendly. Is there anywhere online I can
see something similar to an e-portfolio eg a demo in
moodle? the moodle website itself has a demo but it
didn't seem to work very well when I accessed it, and
didn't have many examples in the demo.

thanks

Thank you Steve - that looks like just the tool for the job! I have had a
chance to look at the tutorial and think I can get my head round writing a
simple (if repetitive) bit of script to trick every key into thinking it is
a left mouse click!

Brilliant, many thanks.

Hello, I am a new subscriber.

When clearing out a store after a Department move, I have 2 x A3 and 2 x A4 Concept keyboards, still in boxes, and not required.

Are they of use to anyone?

Also box of assorted Discs including some blanks for the BBC Computer, which have come from a Rehab workshop. ( We also have the BBC, as a back up to our existing and still used computer which we use to run micronose, a training programme.)

  Thanks, Barbara White

Hi David

If you contact me off list I am happy to sort out some guest access to
ours for you - although I must stress that it is not designed with your
user-group in mind.

Alternatively, I hear the OU is looking into Moodle and there may be
some mileage in talking with the accessibility people involved in this.
