No, I wasn't Govt Bashing - and I heartily agree with your sentiments:

"In the meantime, it is up to us to develop new methods of working that do
not require us to jump into cars or onto trains or planes as we have become
so used to."

I would like to turn this into a slightly more constructive discussion
rather than govt bashing (apols if that wasn't what was intended)

The issue that faces us all is simple - we need to reduce mileage and travel
in order to reduce carbon emissions and to ensure that our time is spent
helping those that need help and not behind the wheel of a car

I think you know that this is an issue that AbilityNet have grappled with
for the past 3-5 years and we have made real progress

The solution lies in using web connectivity to share expertise in our small
area we have

1 Introduced online self assessment of needs

2 Developed self help guides

3 Delivered assessments to users across the web using screensharing and
video conference

4 Delivered training to groups live by video streaming

5 Created and collated online training resources on our own site and via
social networks such as Youtube

6 Supported user machines through remote assistance

Im not quoting these to open a debate on the merits of the approach - it
works and we have many satisfied users as a result

But - how else could we apply this model to achieve the aims described above

Id be very happy to start an online mindmap to encourage us to collaborate
for anyone who is interested - email me if you would like to try such a
model out in addition to a listed discussion

Hi Mark

I am not sure that I agree with your reasoning.

Before I start, let me say that I am no lover of the Oil Companies, but the
problem is not really theirs.

Of the £1.06 per litre, some 78p is tax and VAT. This is something that the
Oil Companies do not control (well not directly anyway). The net cost of
the actual petrol at 1.26 per gallon is quite good value IMHO, a lot cheaper
than a pint of beer or a glass of wine!

If our beloved HMG were to stop wasting so many billions in almost every
sphere of Government, then perhaps the cost of the taxes could be reduced.
In the meantime, it is up to us to develop new methods of working that do
not require us to jump into cars or onto trains or planes as we have become
so used to.

As for the fact that you are expected to undertake what is deemed essential
travel as part of their job, and are not paid a mileage or fuel allowance
for the use of your asset strikes me as being particulary unjust, and one
wonders what would happen if you simply asked for trabnsport to be supplied?

I know that like me there are many of us SEN specialists who
have to do a great deal of travelling as part of their job.
We don't get company cars, allowances or essential user
status. The message below is aimed at all those SEN
specialists who are being particularly hit hard at the
moment.

Mark

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it

We are hitting 106.9 p a litre in some areas now, soon we
will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth
offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a
certain

day campaign that was going around last April or May! The
oil

companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't

continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was
more of >an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for
them. BUT,whoever
thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have
conditioned us
to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take
a ggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
market place
not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each
day, we
consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to
see the
price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket
by not
purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting
ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the
two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to
reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other
companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we
need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol
buyers. It's
really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and
I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you
send it to
at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it
to at
least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the
time the
message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have
reached
over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get
excited and
pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people
will have
been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed
it... ..

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's
all.(and
not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of
us
sends this email out to ten more people within one day of
receipt,
all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within
the
next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference If
this makes
sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a
LITRE
RANGE

It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and
buy your
petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc.
i.e.
boycott BP and Esso
