Claire, as far as I can remember the original hardware soundbeam
creates MIDI output so you'd need:

1) A midi input on the PC (these use the joystick port or external card)
2) software to convert midi to computer control

However the Drake Music Project's E-scape program is designed for
composition/performance with switch and also works with soundbeam. I
can put you in contact with the author if you like.
