Hi Sarah Any chance I could add my name to this request too, please? Schools ask us about these issues all the time, so to have some practical suggestions would be brilliant. You are so right about the need for moderation to develop consistency in making judgements...and the frequent 'generous' assessments in early use. We would suggest it also takes a good year or two for people to become familiar with the P scales descriptions themselves and to be confident in using them to make judgements (helped of course by the collaborative moderation process) Thinking of the ICT exemplars you are developing - have you seen the QCA (2001) documents- Planning, teaching and assessing the curriculum for pupils with learning difficulties? -a series of 15 booklets, including one for each of subject area? They describe quite clearly the learning opportunities needed at each P level. You can download them (including the one for ICT ) Do look as well at the General Guidelines & the Developing Skills docs/booklets in the series(people often miss these and just look at subject books/docs)as they have some invaluable info for students who don't demonstrate linear progress & offer ideas for measuring lateral progress http://www.qca.org.uk/qca_1829.aspx You may also want to look at the National Strategies new P scales Area of their site....has some examples of 'real' pupil evidence...including ICT. Hopefully you'll find it useful for supporting staff/training? http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primary/features/inclusion/sen/p_scales Thanks again for your posting about this issue Sarah Annie Ann Fergusson Centre for Special Needs Education and Research University of Northampton School of Education Park Campus Boughton Green Raod Northampton NN2 7AL 01604 892883 (direct dial) or 01604 735500 (switchboard for messages) ________________________________ From: senit-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk on behalf of Claire Barnes Sent: Mon 16/06/2008 11:15 To: senit at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: Re: [senit] ICT PIVATS - Philippa Hi Sarah I would really, really appreciate a copy of this if you would be so kind! They are very much lower than what they were given last year though (I've just given P4 to a little boy who was given P8 last year!!!) We're a fairly new school (only two and a bit years old) and some things were done in a topsy turvy way eg doing target setting without moderating or having schemes of work so think this is part of problem. Don't know what the analysis service is. I'll send you what I come up with when it is in a readable form as I'll be putting something together for our staff in school.
