hello SENIT folks, I am the author of a blog in the USA Teaching Learners with Multiple Special Needs. There has been much interest over here about your concept of P-Scales and how it is being implemented, in addition to the idea of "value added". In the US these ideas are pretty foreign to us, at least administratively. Many of us in the classroom with that there was a curriculum framework designed for our learners needs, instead of this idea that we must teach our students the age appropriate standards, not matter how far away they are from reaching them (i.e. we must present alternative assessment portfolios to the government most years proving that a student on at age 16 is reading MacBeth and studying Algebra and Chemistry, even if they are working on cause and effect and increasing alertness). We also only use the ideas of "least restrictive environment" and "reasonable educational progress" to determine if we are doing a good job in education our learners with the most significant disabilities. We used to use the concept of "maximum feasible benefit" but that was eliminated ten years ago by the legislature because it was too expensive. I am wondering if anyone in the UK would like to write a guest blog entry (or series of entries) this summer explaining to non-UK special educators the ideas behind the P-Scales. Please contact me off the list at the address below. By the way thank you all for letting me lurk on your list, I find it informative and inspiring! -- Kate Ahern, M.S.Ed. teechkidz at gmail.com www.teachinglearnerswithmultipleneeds.blogspot.com <http://www.teachinglearnerswithmultipleneeds.blogspot.com%20> |
