Article: [senit] ICT and parents of students with SEN

Hi David

I ran a couple of coffee morning sessions at Priory Woods to gauge
interest then set up a partnership with the local college to deliver two
accredited courses for parents and pupils. The sessions were four hours
on a Saturday morning and ran for six weeks.

Each session was split into two workshops:

1. Parents worked with me and the college tutor on the usual office
stuff, however rather than making posters with Publisher we made
communication books. Similarly with Powerpoint we made simple switch
slideshows rather than the usual 'business' type presentation. Our
Internet sessions focused on finding suitable activities for use at
home. This went down very well and we covered all of the material
required by the accreditation body. It was a great learning experience
for the tutor from the college too who had no real experience with
special needs. The children spent this session in our art room with our
art teacher and a couple of volunteers.

2. The children joined the parents for the second session and we looked
specifically at how the computer is used in school with the child -
usual stuff, access devices and software and how best the parent could
support the child at home.

Both courses were very well attended and every parent / child completed
the full six sessions and received their certificates. I did have plans
to run another couple of courses but as colleagues know I left the
school to join Inclusive Technology.

I'll have a dig around and see if I can remember where we got the
funding from and which body supplied the accreditation. I may also have
the course plan and teaching notes too... can't promise those though.

Hope this is useful.

Best Wishes

Ian
