 Just arrived on this thread so haven't gone through all the messages but if
you are just looking to play FLV files
http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/flv-player/ has a stand alone flv player
with several options. Hope this is of some use.

I have created training videos with a piece of software called Camtasia very
simple to use, has a similar look and feel as moviemaker. The text can be
added with the video and it has several different output options on
publishing. I know the software is a screen recording software but you have
the option to import video files wmv, avi ,mpg.

i may be wrong but i think you just import the video into flash and save it
out as swf? it certainly reduces file size. however video sites on the
internet tend to have their flash videos as flv rather than the usual swf,
not sure why.
