Hello everyone, It's not really the weather for computers this weekend so it may be as well that there is just one announcement for you this week. Chris Abbott [chris.abbott at kcl.ac.uk] Reader in e-Inclusion at Kings College, London has sent information about a forthcoming e-inclusion seminar. Have a good weekend Ann McDevitt, Co-Moderator SENIT Independent IT and SEN Consultant ann at mcdevitt.gotadsl.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- King's College London e-inclusion seminar Weds 28th May at 4.30-5.30pm (refreshments from 4pm) Room B6, Waterloo Bridge Wing, Franklin-Wilkins Building, King's College London Researching symbol use by people with learning disabilities Peter Zentel, KMRC, Germany Peter Zentel will describe his experiences working with colleagues at KMRC, Tuebingen during their research into symbol use (PCS, Makaton etc) by people with learning disabilities as one facet of multimedia in conjunction with other representational formats such as text, audio and pictures. The aim was to look for representations, or combinations of representations, which enhance learning and understanding of new information by people with learning disabilities. The research was mainly quantitative and empirically-based. During the seminar, Zentel will describe the results of two ongoing studies and will present the lessons learned when engaged in empirical research with this special target group of people with learning disabilities. The seminar will conclude with some information on a new project which aims to investigate the use of symbols in computer-based communication. Peter Zentel is a teacher at a special school for children and young people with learning disabilities and is just completing his PhD at the Knowledge Media Research Centre, Tuebingen, Germany.
